An illustrated talk and demonstration of traditional Japanese hana-kanzashi using the tsumami technique (flower hair ornamnents, made by folding fabric).
Inlcuding a brief history, modern usage, styles, types, seasonal themes, and materials used/how they are made including photos and illustrations to go with this, and also actual kanzashi to be examined. Possibly a model or two to be looked at.
After the discussion, I will have a full supply of materials for those who would like to try it out. I will show how it is done and what ways I have found are best, and demonstrate some of the simpler complete designs, e.g plum blossom. I will supply pre-cut starched fabric, bases, suitable glue, etc.
Due to time considerations (i.e the things take hours to dry) it's not feasible to promise anyone who attends will have their own finished kanzashi by the end, but they'll at least have learned the basic techniques and had a bit of practice.
A printed summary of the talk and demonstration with be available, so even if you don't stay for the workshop you'll have something to go away with.
